ESD and antistatic clothing
ESD and antistatic clothing uses conductive yarn woven into the fabric so that static charge on the body dissipates in a controlled way. In electronics manufacturing it protects the product; in explosive atmospheres it protects the site.

The conductive yarn is woven into the fabric in a grid, and that structure does not wash out. The garment alone is not enough, though: it works together with ESD footwear and a grounding arrangement.
In facilities with an explosive atmosphere classification, antistatic properties may be required alongside flame retardancy, in which case the fabric must satisfy both requirements together.
ESD clothing is part of a system and is never measured alone. Garment, footwear, flooring and wrist strap work together, and a missing element breaks the chain. When new ESD garments are bought, the existing floor resistance and footwear class should be reviewed as well.
Washing needs special attention here. The conductive yarn does not wash out, but fabric softener coats it and lowers conductivity. Written confirmation that softener is not used should be obtained from any industrial laundry handling these garments.

Is antistatic clothing enough on its own?
No. Static control is a system: clothing, footwear, flooring and grounding work together. Protection provided by clothing alone is incomplete.
How long does an ESD garment last?
The conductive yarn is structural, so it lasts the life of the fabric; what ends the garment is abrasion and broken yarns. It is tracked with regular visual checks and periodic resistance measurement.
Is ESD alone enough in an explosive atmosphere?
No. In areas with an explosive atmosphere classification, antistatic properties are usually required together with flame retardancy, and the fabric must satisfy both at once.
