Head protection
Head protection covers the skull against falling objects and impact. Industrial helmets are tested under EN 397; the harness, shell material and chin strap are the parts of the protection that work together.

A helmet's performance depends as much on the harness as the shell: the harness distributes impact energy. A helmet with a loose or damaged harness gives no protection even with an intact shell.
A chin strap becomes essential for work at height; a helmet that falls while the wearer bends leaves them unprotected and endangers the crew below.
Helmets have a limited life. Sunlight and chemicals fatigue the shell, and a helmet that has taken an impact is withdrawn even if it looks sound.
A helmet protects only if it fits and is in date. The harness must be adjusted so the shell does not move when the head is shaken, and the shell itself has a service life set by the manufacturer because the plastic degrades under ultraviolet light even without impact.
Any helmet that has taken a blow is withdrawn, even with no visible damage: the energy absorption is a one-time function. Marking the date of entry into service inside the shell is the simplest way to run the replacement cycle without argument.

Can a logo be printed on a hard hat?
Yes, corporate logos and colours can be applied using a printing method suited to the shell material. It is important that the application does not weaken the shell structure.
When should a hard hat be replaced?
After any impact, when scratches, cracks or colour fading appear on the shell, and when the manufacturer's stated service life has elapsed.
Can stickers be applied to a helmet?
In limited areas and away from the crown. Solvents in some adhesives soften the shell, and a large sticker hides cracks. Printing or approved labels are preferable.
Is a bump cap the same as a helmet?
No. A bump cap protects against knocking the head on fixed objects in low spaces; it offers no protection against falling objects and must never be substituted for a helmet.
