Work at height equipment
Work at height equipment is a system that brings a fall under control: anchor point, full body harness, lanyard and shock absorber are selected together. If one part is incompatible, the system as a whole fails.

Fall clearance is the calculation most often skipped on site: lanyard length, shock absorber deployment and the user's height together give the free height required. Without that clearance, the system cannot arrest a fall before the ground.
Equipment requires periodic inspection with records kept. A harness or shock absorber that has taken a fall is withdrawn even when it looks undamaged.
A work positioning belt does not arrest falls; it is for positioning only. Confusing the two is one of the most dangerous mistakes on site.
Fall protection is a system, and the anchor point is the part most often neglected. A harness and lanyard are useless attached to something that cannot take the load, and the anchor must be checked and documented like any other component.
Fall arrest and work positioning are different things. A positioning system holds the worker in place to work with both hands; a fall arrest system stops a fall that has already begun and requires clearance below. Many incidents come from using one where the other was needed.

Frequently asked questions
Can a work positioning belt be used for fall arrest?
No. A positioning belt is for work positioning and restraint only. Fall arrest requires a full body harness under EN 361.
Can equipment that has arrested a fall be reused?
No. A harness, lanyard or shock absorber that has taken fall load must be withdrawn and destroyed immediately; looking undamaged does not mean it is safe.
How often is a harness inspected?
Visually before every use and formally by a competent person at set intervals. Cut webbing, deformed hardware, or any harness that has arrested a fall is withdrawn permanently.
What is suspension trauma?
Blood pooling in the legs of a worker hanging motionless in a harness, which becomes dangerous within minutes. A rescue plan, not just the equipment, is part of working at height.
Why is the anchor point planned separately?
A harness and lanyard are useless attached to something that cannot take the load. The anchor must be checked and documented like any other component.
Positioning or fall arrest?
A positioning system holds the worker in place to work with both hands; a fall arrest system stops a fall already underway and requires clearance below. Using one for the other is a frequent cause of incidents.
